Beerus destroys planets for a living, which is a job rather than a hobby. Every universe has one destroyer to balance its creator, and Beerus holds the post in Universe 7. He sleeps for decades at a stretch because a god working at full pace would empty the place. When he wakes he wants two things: something he has not eaten before, and a fight with the Super Saiyan God he saw in a dream.
Both of those bring him to Earth in Battle of Gods, the 2013 film that restarted Dragon Ball after seventeen years away. The plot turns on food. Beerus is offended by an insult over dessert, calms down over octopus dumplings, and spares the planet largely because the cooking is good. It is a strange premise for a movie about a deity and it works because the series has always been sincere about eating.
His arrival rewrote the ceiling. Before him the strongest thing in the story was a Saiyan; after him there are twelve universes, a hierarchy of gods, angels who instruct the destroyers, and a Grand Priest above all of them. Everything Dragon Ball Super does afterwards runs on a scale that Beerus casually established by turning up hungry.
Spelling BEERUS
BEERUS is six letters and the double E is invented. The Japanese is ビルス, Birusu, from the word for virus, which is where his brother Champa's name and their whole family theme did not originally come from. English localisation reshaped it into a drink pun so it would sit beside Whis and Champa. Say Birusu out loud and you will spell it wrong.
