Otakana

Privacy

Short version: there are no accounts, your progress lives on your own device, the leaderboard only knows a random id and the name you picked, and nothing is sold. Effective 3 September 2026.

On the web

Your stats, streak, assists, trophies, theme and in-progress board are saved in your browser under keys beginning with otakana.. That data stays on your device.

Playing the daily creates a random identifier for your browser, otakana.player.id. It is not linked to your email or to anything you have done elsewhere. When a daily finishes, that identifier, the display name you picked and the result (won or lost, and in how many guesses) go to our leaderboard server. Your guesses and the answer are never sent. The name you choose is public on the board.

Cloudflare serves the site and runs the leaderboard. Like any host it handles your IP address to deliver pages, to limit how often scores can be posted, and to run the Turnstile bot check on score posts.

Google’s AdSense script loads on every page so Google can verify the site. No ad slots are placed yet, so nothing is shown today, but Otakana may show ads here later.

In the iOS and Android apps

The apps keep the same game data in the app’s own storage, and send the same leaderboard fields. Deleting the app removes everything stored on the device.

The apps show AdMob ads. AdMob receives the usual advertising data: your device advertising identifier, ad interactions, coarse location and crash data. Ad content is capped at the G rating.

Game Center on iOS and Play Games on Android are optional. If sign-in works, we report trophy unlocks and two scores to Apple or Google. If it fails or you decline, the game plays exactly the same and your trophies still unlock locally.

The Remove Ads purchase runs entirely through Apple or Google. No card number, name or billing address reaches us. All we keep is a flag on your device saying you own it.

Usage measurement

Both the site and the apps send anonymous event counts to PostHog: which mode was started, how many guesses a round took, which screen appeared, whether an ad was shown. Guesses, answers and puzzle ids are never included. We never call PostHog’s identify, so no person profile is built, and autocapture, session replay and surveys are all off. On the web, PostHog also records which page you opened and the site that linked you there. It reaches PostHog through our own domain, stores a random device id in your browser and honours Do Not Track.

Why we collect it

To keep your streak across sessions, to rank the monthly board, to pay for hosting through ads on mobile, and to see which parts of the game people actually use. We do not sell your data, and we do not buy data about you.

Who else is involved

Google, as AdMob in the apps and AdSense on the web. PostHog, for the anonymous counts. Cloudflare, which hosts the site, the leaderboard database and the Turnstile check. Apple and Google Play, for the Remove Ads purchase and the trophy services. Each one handles that data under its own privacy policy.

Keeping and deleting

Everything on your device lasts until you remove it. On the web, clearing site data for otakana.net wipes your stats, streak, trophies and player identifier. On a phone, deleting the app does the same. Either way the next daily starts you fresh.

The leaderboard keeps your player identifier, chosen name and daily scores so the monthly board can be ranked. A score already posted stays on the board for the rest of that month even after you clear your storage, because we have no way to link the two. To have your name and scores removed, write to support@otakana.net from the device you play on and tell us the name on the board.

Children

Otakana is for players aged 13 and over and is not designed for children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has used the game, write to us and we will remove any leaderboard entry they made.

Your choices

On iOS, the app asks for permission to track only after you have finished at least one puzzle. Saying no is fine and costs you nothing in the game. Where local law requires it, both apps show Google’s consent form on first launch, and Settings then keeps a “Privacy options” row so you can change that answer whenever you like.

Buying Remove Ads hides the banner and the between-puzzle ad. You can skip the leaderboard by not choosing a name, and change the name you did choose at any time. The whole game is playable without watching a single ad.

Changes

If what we collect changes, this page changes first, and the date at the top moves with it. Ads on the web will be named here before any ad slot goes live.
