Casca joined the mercenaries at twelve, after Griffith handed her a sword instead of rescuing her, and worked her way up to leading a unit of her own. She is a better tactician than almost anyone around her and spends a great deal of energy proving it again each time a new man arrives. They follow her. They also make her prove it again.

Her feelings for Griffith are the engine and the trap. He is the reason she has a life worth defending and the reason she cannot see him clearly, and when Guts turns up she has to work out what she actually wants for the first time since childhood. The three of them are the whole story. Everything afterwards is aftermath.

Kentaro Miura started Berserk in 1989 and gave the Golden Age arc, which is really Casca's arc, more than a thousand pages of build. What happens to her at the end of it is the most argued-over stretch of the manga, and readers who bounce off Berserk usually bounce there. Miura drew the series until he died in 2021, leaving it unfinished at more than forty volumes.

Spelling CASCA

CASCA is five letters, two C's, and both of them are hard. The Japanese キャスカ, kyasuka, tempts a K at the front, and neither C is a K on the tiles. The word reads as a mirror: C-A-S, then C-A. Once the S in the middle is green you are choosing between two letters for four slots.
