Dandere names a character who is quiet in company and not quiet by nature. Put her in a group and she watches the floor. Put her alone with the one person she trusts and the sentences arrive complete, funny and sometimes faster than the other character can follow. The gap between those two modes is the entire appeal, and stories usually make the audience wait a long time for the second one.
The name is a compound, like the rest of the family. The dere half comes from deredere, the sound-word for going soft and lovestruck. The dan half is usually traced to danmari, meaning silence or saying nothing. Together they describe a person whose affection exists at full strength and simply has no public interface.
Terms like this were coined by fans on Japanese message boards in the early 2000s, spread through fan wikis and character quizzes, then travelled back into how writers pitch characters. That order matters. Tsundere and yandere describe patterns that existed for decades before anyone had a word for them. Dandere is a label the audience wrote, and the industry now designs against.
