Fuko Ibuki wanders the corridors of a school she barely attends, whittling starfish out of scrap wood with a small knife and handing them to anyone who stops walking. They are invitations to her older sister's wedding. Most students accept one out of politeness and have forgotten her by the next corridor, which turns out to be the arc's real subject rather than a background detail.
Tomoya and Nagisa help her distribute them, largely because refusing would take more effort than agreeing. The carvings are bad. Fuko defends each one with total conviction, gets distracted halfway through a sentence by her own hands, and lives on the star-shaped candy somebody gives her. Key wrote the whole thing as comedy for about three episodes and then turned the same jokes over.
Clannad began as a Key visual novel for Windows in 2004, and Kyoto Animation adapted it in 2007 with After Story following the year after. Fuko's route runs first in the anime because it establishes the rule the rest of the show depends on: in this story, whether people remember you decides what happens next.
Spelling FUKO
The Japanese writes her name with a long U, which older fansubs spelled out as FUUKO and official releases trimmed. Otakana takes the trimmed form: FUKO, four letters, a single U. The characters mean wind child. Her family name, Ibuki, is a different word entirely and is not what this row is asking for.
