Galo works for Burning Rescue, a squad who fight fires in mechs because the fires in question are made by people. The Burnish are humans who spontaneously combust and can shape what they burn, hunted and detained by a government that treats them as a natural disaster. Galo is loud, shirtless under the harness, sincere to the point of being difficult to argue with, and completely certain he is one of the good ones.
The film spends its running time complicating that certainty. He meets Lio Fotia, who leads the Burnish resistance, and the two of them spend a while trying to kill each other before working out that they have been told the same lie from opposite ends. Almost everything Galo believes about his employer turns out to be wrong, and he adjusts at the speed of someone who has never learned to hesitate.
Promare came out in 2019, Studio Trigger's first original feature, directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and written by Kazuki Nakashima, the pair behind Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill. It is drawn in flat pink and cyan triangles and moves like a fireworks display.
Spelling GALO
GALO is four letters and the L is an English decision. ガロ is Garo, since Japanese has no separate L sound, so a transliteration from the katakana would give you the wrong letter in the middle of a very short word. One L, not two. Thymos is the surname and is not wanted, which leaves GALO as one of the shortest answers in the library.
