Johan Liebert is polite, softly spoken, fluent in several languages, and about twenty when the story catches up with him. People who spend an evening in his company tend to end up dead, often by their own hand, and he rarely touches anybody. His method is conversation. He finds the thing a person cannot survive knowing about themselves, says it out loud, and leaves.
Where he comes from is the spine of the series. Naoki Urasawa sets him inside a real post-war Europe of orphanages, defector programmes and East German paperwork, and lets Doctor Tenma work backwards through it across two countries. A children's picture book called The Nameless Monster keeps turning up in the file, and the story it tells reads closer to a diagnosis than to a clue.
Monster ran in Big Comic Original from 1994 to 2001, eighteen volumes, and Madhouse animated all of it in 2004 across seventy four episodes. It won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. Johan is the reason the series gets filed as a thriller rather than a mystery, because the question is never who did it, and answering why does nobody any good at all.
Spelling JOHAN
JOHAN is five letters, a German name for a character raised in Germany, and it is said Yohan rather than Joe-han. The trap is the composer. Johann Sebastian Bach doubles the N, and that muscle memory is hard to shake, but there is one N here. The surname Liebert never appears, which is just as well, since its IE order catches people out too.
