Japan in this series is a country with a kaiju problem and an industry built around it. Kafka works the unglamorous end: after the Defence Force kills something enormous, his firm turns up to cut it apart and dispose of it. He failed the Force entrance exam eight times. He also promised Mina Ashiro, who passed and became a captain, that he would fight beside her.
Then a small creature flies into his mouth, and he can turn into a kaiju himself. Specifically he becomes the one the Force logs as Number 8 and puts on its kill list. The plot that follows is a man hiding the most dangerous secret in the country while filling in an application form to join the people hunting him.
Naoya Matsumoto has run Kaiju No. 8 on Shonen Jump Plus since 2020, where it became one of the app's fastest-read series, and Production I.G animated it in 2024. The hook is the age. Shonen protagonists are fifteen. This one has a bad back and a career he is embarrassed by.
Spelling KAFKA
KAFKA is five letters, two of them K, with A as the only vowel and it appears twice. That shape gets cheap fast once one K lands. The name points at Franz Kafka, whose best known story wakes a man up as an insect, which is roughly what happens to Hibino on page one. The tiles want the given name; the family name Hibino stays off.
