Kenshiro inherited Hokuto Shinken and then lost nearly everything else. His fiancee was taken, his brothers turned on him, and he walks a post-apocalyptic wasteland finding towns run by gangs who have concluded that strength is the only law still in force. He disagrees with them, briefly and fatally, roughly once per episode.
The formula almost never changes. A village is being squeezed. The bandits laugh at the quiet man in the torn jacket. He touches five points on the leader's body, walks away, and the leader has just long enough to object before he comes apart. Omae wa mou shindeiru, you are already dead, is the most quoted line in Japanese action manga and the punchline of a joke the series tells hundreds of times without wearing it out.
Kenshiro's design came from Bruce Lee, down to the build, the jacket and the shrieks. Fist of the North Star arrived in 1983 in front of a Jump readership raised on sport manga and reset what a shonen hero could look like: an adult, mostly silent, working through grief with his hands. A great deal of what followed carries some of it.
Spelling KENSHIRO
KENSHIRO is eight letters, which helps rather than hurts: ken-shi-ro, three clean syllables with nothing doubled. The Japanese ends on a long vowel and romanises as KENSHIROU, so that trailing U is the letter English throws away and the tiles will not accept. The SH in the middle is one Japanese sound written with two English letters. Eight tiles, three vowels, no surprises after that.
