A mangaka draws and usually writes a Japanese comic. On a weekly magazine the job means roughly nineteen pages every seven days: thumbnails approved by an editor, pencils, inks, screentone, delivery, then the cycle restarts before those pages have even printed. Most artists run a small studio of assistants for backgrounds and effects and keep the characters for themselves.
The editor is closer to a partner than a supervisor. They argue about story direction, push for changes before a chapter is approved, and read the reader survey cards that decide whether a series continues at all. Weak rankings for long enough end a serialisation, sometimes mid-arc, which is why so many manga finish with an obvious hurry in the final three chapters.
The cost of that schedule is documented and grim. Hiatuses for health are common, several well-known artists have stopped mid-series, and the industry has been arguing about the pace for as long as it has existed. Monthly magazines and web platforms are the release valve, and a growing number of artists now choose them deliberately.
