Marco ate a Mythical Zoan fruit and becomes a phoenix, which in this world means his flames restore instead of burning. He heals as he fights and can heal other people, so he spent a war standing between an admiral and everyone behind him, declining to be finished. Blue flame is the shape the series reaches for whenever a scene needs somebody who will still be there afterwards.
He is also a doctor, which is no coincidence. On a crew of very loud men Marco is the one who checks on people. In Japanese he ends most of his sentences on a lazy drawn-out particle that translators render as a trailing yoi, and it makes a man who can survive an admiral sound permanently half asleep.
After his captain's era ends he goes home and works as his island's doctor, turning down every offer to build something of his own. Readers who wanted him crowned an emperor found that frustrating, which is exactly the point. The Whitebeard crew was a family rather than an ambition, and Marco is the member who keeps behaving as though it still is.
Spelling MARCO
MARCO is five letters, spelled with a C where an English guesser reaches for a K. The Japanese reads Maruko, since the language needs a helper vowel between the R and the K that English throws away, so the kana runs three beats and the tiles run two. Nothing is doubled and nothing is long. The C is the whole exam.
