Nami navigates by reading weather that most sailors never see coming, across seas where the climate changes by island and the compass refuses to point north. Her dream is a map of the entire world drawn in her own hand, which is a strange ambition on a ship of people who mostly want to punch one specific thing very hard.
Before that she stole from pirates for eight years to buy her village back from the fishman who had taken it, keeping ledgers, faking loyalty and letting everyone including herself believe she had no friends left. The arc where that ends is the first time One Piece asks the reader to cry, and it gets there by having a boy put his hat on her head without saying anything.
In a fight she uses the Clima-Tact, a staff Usopp built for her that pushes air temperature and humidity into wind, mirages and eventually lightning she aims by hand. It is the crew's most technical weapon and it belongs to its least physically powerful member. Money still motivates her more reliably than anything else on the ship, and the series has never apologised for that.
Spelling NAMI
NAMI is four letters and two beats, and the row is about as clean as this game gets. The word is the ordinary Japanese noun for wave, which is a fair name for a navigator and a small joke about where she is happiest. Nothing is doubled, nothing is lengthened, and it alternates consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel from start to finish.
