The occult club of one. He believes in aliens, argues that ghosts are superstition, and gets dragged to a cursed tunnel to prove it. What lives there is Turbo Granny, a yokai who runs faster than a car, and she takes his power in a trade that the manga plays for as much embarrassment as possible. When he transforms he becomes a dark, spindly, fast thing that clears rooftops.
Momo refuses to call him by his family name, so he becomes Okarun instead, and the nickname sticks for the rest of the series. Underneath the stammering he is stubborn in a way that surprises everyone, including himself. He runs at things far larger than he is because Momo is behind him, which is the closest either of them gets to admitting anything.
The transformation has a timer and a cost, so most fights are a countdown rather than a power-up. That constraint is why the Dandadan action reads as frantic instead of triumphant. Science Saru's 2024 adaptation leaned into it with loose, elastic animation and a soundtrack that treats an alien invasion and a school crush as the same emergency.
Spelling OKARUN
OKARUN is six letters, and the R is the trap. The Japanese オカルン uses ru, which English ears often hear as an L, so OKALUN feels right and fills nothing. Otakana wants the nickname, not the family name he never gets to use. Three even beats, o-ka-run, ending on the only closed syllable.
