Houtaro Oreki runs on a personal energy budget. If a thing is not necessary he does not do it, and if it is, he tries to finish it fast. His sister writes from abroad and instructs him to join the dying Classics Club, which is how he ends up in a room with Eru Chitanda, who is curious about everything and does not let go of anything.
The mysteries are small on purpose. A locked clubroom, a missing library book, a teacher who changed a lesson plan, an anthology with a strange title. Nobody dies. Oreki solves them by sitting still and thinking, and Kyoto Animation films that thinking as visual metaphor, which is why a show about deduction over tea looks the way it does.
Honobu Yonezawa published the first novel in 2001, opening the Classic Literature Club series, and Kyoto Animation adapted it in 2012. The joke underneath is that the energy-saving policy is cover. Oreki is very good at something and has decided he would rather not find out how good, because knowing would create obligations.
Spelling OREKI
OREKI is the family name, and taking it spares you the given name, where a long O gets written as Hotaro, Houtarou or Hotarou depending on who is typing. The surname has no such argument. Five letters, three vowels alternating with two consonants, and no letter appears twice anywhere in the row.
