Seiyuu means voice actor, and in Japan it is a career with its own training schools, agencies and star system. Actors often record together to finished picture, and a lead role can run for years. The work spreads well past anime into games, dubbing foreign films, narration, and the drama CDs that adapt a manga with no animation attached at all.
The public half of the job is unusual. Seiyuu host radio shows, appear at concerts, release albums, and turn up in person at screenings and events, sometimes performing in character. Fans follow an actor across roles the way film audiences follow a face, and a casting announcement moves the conversation about a new series before a frame of it has aired.
Megumi Hayashibara is the standard illustration: Rei Ayanami, Faye Valentine, Lina Inverse and the female Ranma, alongside a long recording career and her own radio show. The range is the point. A working seiyuu is expected to move between a fourteen-year-old boy, a monster and a narrator inside the same week.
Spelling SEIYUU
SEIYUU is six letters holding two vowel pairs. 声優 ends in a long U, and fandom spells that long vowel as a doubled U rather than reaching for a macron. So the word finishes UU, which looks wrong and is right. The EI in the middle is also two letters rather than one. Six tiles, four of them vowels.
