Skypiea is a country resting on a sea of solidified cloud, above the ordinary ocean, reachable by a knock-up stream: a current that fires upward when pressure under the seabed releases. The Straw Hats take that route deliberately. The alternative is a giant bird, and the bird is not dependable enough to plan a voyage around.
What they find has its own history and a grudge buried in it. The people of the sky and the descendants of a shipwrecked island have been fighting over one patch of real ground for four hundred years, refereed by a self-appointed god with a lightning fruit. The arc is strange even by this series' standards and it divided readers for years before its reputation recovered.
The payoff is archaeological. Skypiea holds a poneglyph carrying a message from a man who lived four centuries earlier and wrote it for whoever might arrive next, and the bell he rang gets rung again. It is the point where One Piece first makes clear that its buried history is a plot rather than scenery, which is why people who quit during the arc are usually told to go back.
Spelling SKYPIEA
SKYPIEA is seven letters with an unusual shape: the Y does a vowel's work and the word closes on three more of them, I then E then A. The Japanese reads Sukaipia, since the language cannot start a word with an SK cluster and slips a vowel in between, so the kana gives you four beats and the tiles give you a jam of consonants. Nothing doubles.
