A trope is a device used often enough that an audience recognises it on sight. It is not a cliche by definition, though it can turn into one. Tropes are how a story says a lot in very little time: the transfer student arrives, the rival appears in a doorway, someone announces a power reading off a device, and the audience fills in the rest unprompted.
Anime has an unusually stable set of them because so much of the medium runs on shared formats. Weekly shonen produces tournament arcs. Long series produce a detour to a hot spring. Seasonal comedies produce the episode at the beach and the episode with the cultural festival. Viewers keep watching partly to see how a particular show handles a shape they already know cold.
The vocabulary spread through TV Tropes, a wiki founded in 2004 that named thousands of these devices and handed fandom a shared jargon. There is a cost to that. Once you can name a device you start seeing it everywhere, and it becomes easy to describe a story as a list of parts, which tells you nothing about whether it worked.
Spelling TROPE
TROPE is five letters ending in a silent E, from the Greek tropos, meaning a turn. The trap is the vowel: it is a single O, not the double O of troop. Say it to rhyme with rope and the row settles. TROPE also puts a T and an R together, which is worth a lot on an opening guess.
