An insult that lost its sting somewhere on the way to becoming a self-description.

Weeb is short for weeaboo and describes a non-Japanese fan of Japanese pop culture, historically one whose enthusiasm had crowded out everything else. The original was harsher than the current use. It targeted people who sprinkled Japanese into English sentences, claimed the country as a personality, and treated Japan as a fantasy rather than a place with commuting and tax forms.
The route the word took is odd. The earlier slur was wapanese. Around 2005 a 4chan word filter began replacing it automatically with weeaboo, a nonsense term lifted from a Perry Bible Fellowship comic strip where it had meant nothing at all. The filter stuck, the new word spread, and the original was largely forgotten. Weeb is the shortening that came afterwards.
Usage has softened a lot. Plenty of people now call themselves weebs cheerfully, the way other hobbies reclaim their own insults, and the anime audience has grown far too large for the term to mark anybody as unusual. It can still be thrown as an insult. Mostly it gets thrown at a friend.
Spelling WEEB
WEEB is four letters with a double E, clipped from the longer WEEABOO, which stacks three vowels in a row and would make a nastier row to fill. Nothing here comes from Japanese, despite appearances. The whole word is English internet slang and it is spelled exactly the way an English speaker would guess.
