Alphonse Elric lost his entire body when he and his brother tried to bring their mother back, and Edward pinned his soul to a suit of armour before it could follow the rest. He is therefore seven feet of hollow steel with a child's voice inside it, unable to sleep, taste or feel anything, and consistently the more patient of the two brothers.
People mistake him for the Fullmetal Alchemist constantly, which is the running joke of the series: the title belongs to Edward, the short one. Al collects stray cats he is not allowed to keep and hides them in his own chest cavity. He also fights extremely well, since a body with no pain and no fatigue is an advantage nobody else in the room has.
Hiromu Arakawa began the manga in Monthly Shonen Gangan in 2001 and finished it in 2010, twenty seven volumes with a plan behind them. Bones animated it twice: once in 2003, which overtook the manga and invented an ending, and again in 2009 as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which followed the book to the last page.
Spelling ALPHONSE
ALPHONSE is eight letters and the PH is the problem, since it sounds like an F and is not one. ALFONSE, ALPHONS and ALPHONZE all feel right at speed. The name is French in origin, so it keeps a silent E on the end as well. Two traps in one word, both sitting in the back half of the row.
