Beru came out of the Jeju Island arc, which is where Solo Leveling stops being a dungeon crawl and starts being a war. He was the ant king's soldier and a genuine nightmare: fast, insectoid, and able to speak because he acquired the ability from a hunter he had eaten. When he loses, Jinwoo raises him as a shadow, and the monster returns as a servant.
What follows is the comedy of the second half. Beru addresses Jinwoo as his liege, throws himself into poses, congratulates his master at unnecessary length, and takes any perceived insult to him as a personal wound. Igris is the dignified one. Beru is the one who makes the shadow army entertaining, and he is arguably the strongest thing in it.
He also demonstrates how the shadow system works as a story device. Every enemy Jinwoo beats becomes permanent power, so the cast keeps growing by absorption rather than by recruitment. Chugong's web novel began in 2016 and the A-1 Pictures adaptation arrived in 2024, by which point Beru had a following of his own.
Spelling BERU
BERU is four letters and the ending is the trap. The Japanese and Korean both render the sound as ru, which English ears hear as an L, so BELU looks correct and fills nothing. The same swap turns Rufi into LUFFY going the other direction. Four letters, two beats, be-ru, no doubled consonants.
