Igris was a commander of knights before Jinwoo ever met him, and their first meeting is a duel that Jinwoo very nearly loses. Winning it earns the extraction, and the crimson figure that rises afterwards is the first shadow soldier anybody would call impressive. He kneels once at the start of every summoning, which the series repeats often enough that the gesture has become the character.
He does not speak. Everything Igris communicates arrives through posture and a sword, and the fandom filled the silence itself, casting him as the honourable retainer of a man who is steadily becoming less human. When Jinwoo is unconscious or absent, Igris is the one left in charge, and the story treats that as the highest thing his master can hand out.
The webtoon adaptation by Jang Sung-rak, working as DUBU, is where the red armour got its look, and it did as much for the property's reach as the original novel did. A-1 Pictures brought it to television in 2024 with the kneel intact, because the animators understood what people had turned up for.
Spelling IGRIS
IGRIS is five letters with two I's, at the first and fourth positions, and a consonant cluster GR that Japanese and Korean syllables would normally break apart with a vowel. That cluster is the useful bit: few answers here run two consonants together. The name comes to English through a Korean web novel rather than Japanese, so the usual romanisation traps do not apply.
