Bright Noa is a junior officer when the attack on Side 7 kills almost everyone senior to him. What is left is a new ship, the White Base, a crew of civilian refugees, and a fifteen-year-old who can fly the prototype. Bright takes command because the alternative is nobody taking it, and spends the war being younger than the job requires.

He is best remembered for hitting people. When Amuro refuses to fly, Bright slaps him, and the boy's protest that even his own father never struck him has been quoted ever since. Fans named the move the Bright Slap, and it followed him through every later series he appeared in, usually as a joke and occasionally as the thing that gets a teenager back into a cockpit.

Tomino kept him around. Bright commands ships in Zeta Gundam, in Char's Counterattack and beyond, ageing roughly in step with the franchise, which is unusual for a man who started out shouting orders in the background. The 1979 series ran 43 episodes after the network cut it short, and his crew are most of the reason it holds up as a workplace drama.

Spelling BRIGHT

BRIGHT is six letters and an ordinary English word, which is a trap in reverse: the GH is silent, and nobody spells silent letters from memory. Japanese writes it ブライト, buraito, which hands you the sound and none of the H. The family name is Noa, the given name is BRIGHT, and the game wants the one that looks like an adjective.
