The Zaku is Zeon's mass-produced mobile suit: green, hunched, with a single camera eye that slides along a slot in its head and a shield hanging off one shoulder. It won Zeon the opening weeks of the war by being the only thing of its kind, then spent the rest of the series being destroyed in quantity by the Federation's prototype.
That is exactly why it matters. A war show needs a machine that can lose, and the Zaku gave Gundam an army instead of a monster of the week. It comes in variants, gets repainted for aces, and its pilots have names, radio chatter and bad days. Char's personal red one, the fast one, is a Zaku with the serial numbers filed off.
Off screen it may be the most profitable robot design in Japan. Bandai has sold Zaku model kits without a break since 1980, in every grade and scale the hobby has invented, and the mono-eye has become visual shorthand for a disposable enemy machine across the entire genre. People who have never watched an episode recognise the sliding eye on sight.
Spelling ZAKU
ZAKU is four letters and the Z is the gift. Very few answers start with one, so a confirmed Z and four slots leaves almost nothing left to guess. Japanese ザク matches letter for letter, with no long vowel and no doubled consonant. The only wobble is the ending: it is ZAKU with a U, not ZAKO or ZACU.
