Emilia enters Re:Zero chasing a stolen insignia and rescuing a stranger who has just been mugged in an alley. The stranger is Subaru. The insignia turns out to be the token that qualifies her to stand for the throne of Lugunica, which is a considerable thing to have left lying in a pickpocket's hand.
Being a silver-haired half-elf makes her hated on sight. The Witch of Envy who froze half the world had the same face, and the kingdom's memory of that is neither accurate nor open to discussion. Emilia responds by being relentlessly decent to people who spit at her, and the series treats that as a political position rather than a personality trait.
Tappei Nagatsuki started the story as a free web serial on Shosetsuka ni Naro in 2012, print followed in 2014, and White Fox animated the first season in 2016. Rie Takahashi voices her. The writing is careful not to make her a prize: her campaign, her contract with the spirit Puck and her own doubts all run on their own terms.

EMILIA is six letters and the Japanese エミリア romanises as Emiria, another katakana name where R stands in for L. Spell it by ear and you may land on EMIRIA, or drift into the English AMELIA, and neither fills the row. Watch the middle three letters, which run ILI rather than ILY or ELI.
