Faye Valentine was frozen after an accident and thawed a very long time later with no memory and a debt that had been quietly growing the whole time. The number is large enough to be a life sentence. She responds by gambling, lying, stealing small ships and attaching herself to the Bebop, where the food is bad but nobody sends invoices.
The cheerfulness is armour. She has no past she can check against anyone, so she treats every attachment as temporary and makes a habit of leaving first. Later sessions hand her a piece of home footage, and what she does with it is the most careful writing in the series. Megumi Hayashibara plays her in Japanese and Wendee Lee in English.
Her outfit gets more attention than her plotting, which is a shame, because she is the crew member who most often walks off with the money. She flies a red Redtail, cheats at cards, and reads other people quickly. Jet distrusts her on principle. Spike mostly ignores her, which annoys her considerably more.
Spelling FAYE
FAYE is four letters and hangs entirely on the silent E. Drop it and you get FAY, a real English word and a real guess, and the row stays one short. The Japanese フェイ reads as Fei, so hearing the name aloud gives you nothing about the final letter. Two vowels, one Y, and the Y sits third rather than last.
