Giyu Tomioka is the Water Hashira, and his job on the night he meets the Kamado family is simple. He finds a boy shielding a demon, and instead of executing them both he sends Tanjiro up a mountain to a trainer with a note. That single decision starts the story. He never explains it well, then or later, because explaining things is not something he does.
His swordsmanship is Water Breathing at its most complete, including an eleventh form he invented himself, Dead Calm, which stops everything at the edge of his blade rather than flowing around it. Off the battlefield he is famously bad company. He insists he is not one of the Hashira despite being one, sits alone at meetings, and once flattened a conversation with a line that fans have quoted ever since.
The reason is survivor's guilt, and the series is patient about revealing it. Giyu passed the final selection while someone else did not, and he has been treating his own rank as an accounting error ever since. ufotable gave his water effects the heaviest ink-wash styling in the show, which suits a man who fights beautifully and talks like a closed door.
Spelling GIYU
GIYU is four letters and the long vowel goes missing on the way into English. The Japanese 冨岡義勇 ends in a held u, so GIYUU or GIYŪ is closer to the sound and neither will fit. Otakana wants the given name; the family name Tomioka is three letters longer. Watch the middle: it is IY, not IU or YU.
