Hideyoshi Nagachika has known Kaneki since childhood and calls him by a nickname nobody else uses. He is loud, friendly, permanently unbothered, and treats his friend's sudden strange behaviour as something to work around rather than interrogate. Then he takes a part-time job with the CCG, the agency that hunts ghouls, and mentions it casually, which is the first sign that Hide is paying more attention than anyone realised.
Sui Ishida uses him as the story's one point of ordinary human warmth, and then makes that warmth the sharpest tool in the book. Hide works out what Kaneki has become, roughly when it happens, and says nothing, because saying it would force his friend to answer. Every cheerful line he delivers after that reads twice.
He is also the only character in Tokyo Ghoul who consistently behaves like a person with hobbies. He listens to music, chases part-time work, complains about food and drags Kaneki outdoors, and in a series where almost everyone is either hunting or hiding, that ordinariness is what readers latch onto. Fan polls put him near the top and the reason is not complicated.
Spelling HIDE
HIDE is spelled like the English verb and is pronounced nothing like it. It is two beats, hi-de, the short form of Hideyoshi, and the final E is spoken. Four letters, and the trap is that your eye reads an English word while your ear expects hee-deh. The tiles want HIDE either way, which makes it one of the shorter rows in the game.
