Illyasviel von Einzbern arrives in Fuyuki with a red coat, white hair and Berserker, a servant with the strength of a demigod and no capacity for conversation. She is a homunculus, built by the Einzbern family for exactly this war, and raised to think of the other masters as toys that will break eventually.
The cheerfulness is the unnerving part. She skips, she teases, she calls the protagonist by a nickname, and she orders a mountain of muscle to kill him in the same breath. Her family hired his adoptive father for the previous war and did not get what they paid for, a grievance she has been told about at length.
Type-Moon liked her enough to spin her into an alternate world where the war never happened and she is a magical girl instead. Prisma Illya has now run longer than the story it came from. In the original she is the reminder that the Einzberns build people the way other families forge swords.
Spelling ILLYA
ILLYA is five letters with a double L, and that is the whole difficulty. The short form of Illyasviel could reasonably be spelled ILYA, which is also a common Russian given name, and the Japanese イリヤ doubles nothing and gives you no help. Two L's, then Y, then A. That Y in the middle is the letter that locks the row.
