Uryu Ishida is the last student in the room you would suspect, which is exactly how he likes it. He is a Quincy, one of a line of human archers who destroyed Hollows outright rather than purifying them, and the Soul Society wiped out his people for it two centuries ago. His grandfather died waiting for Soul Reaper backup that arrived too late, and Uryu has been carrying that grudge since childhood.
His bow, Ginrei Kojaku, is drawn from spirit particles in the air, so his ammunition depends on where he is standing rather than what he brought. That gives him a fighting style built on positioning, traps and preparation, and it makes him the tactician of a cast that mostly runs forward. He also sews, immaculately, and will lecture anyone who finds that funny.
The Quincy and Soul Reaper argument is the closest thing Bleach has to a thesis: one side sends souls on to keep the world in balance, the other destroys them and does not care about the ledger. Uryu spends the series working beside people whose institution killed his family, which he handles with rigid politeness and the occasional glare.
Spelling ISHIDA
The tiles ask for the family name, ISHIDA, which is the kinder half. His given name is 雨竜, rain dragon, and it carries a long vowel that turns up as Uryu, Uryuu or Uryū depending on the translation. ISHIDA is 石田, stone and rice field, one of the plainest surnames in Japan. Six letters, three vowels, SH in the middle.
