Izumi Curtis taught Edward and Alphonse alchemy after they turned up on her doorstep asking, and her teaching method was to strand them on an island for a month with one knife. The lesson she wanted them to reach, one is all and all is one, is the closest thing the series has to a thesis. She is also violent, funny and impossible to argue with.
She insists she is only a housewife whenever anyone credits her skill, and the joke has a hard edge underneath it. Izumi attempted human transmutation herself after losing a child, and the toll was internal: she coughs blood through most of her scenes and refuses to slow down for any of it. She warned the brothers off the taboo without ever admitting she had crossed it.
Her husband Sig runs a butcher shop and is roughly twice her width, and their marriage is one of the few uncomplicated things in the series. She keeps her past to herself and keeps teaching anyway. The moment the brothers finally work out what she is hiding is quieter than any fight in the show and hits harder than most.
Spelling IZUMI
IZUMI is five letters and the Z is the gift: it is rare enough that landing it usually locks the row in place. The game wants her given name rather than Curtis, which she took by marriage. In Japanese 泉 means a spring or fountain, and it is an ordinary name in Japan. Vowels sit first, third and fifth.
