Kagome Higurashi lives at a Tokyo shrine, which she treats as ordinary until something pulls her down the Bone-Eater's Well and into the Sengoku period. She is carrying the Shikon Jewel inside her body without knowing it. Within a day she has been attacked for it, woken a half demon pinned to a tree, and shattered the jewel into shards with a badly aimed arrow.
The shards are the plot. Every fragment hands whatever holds it more power, so the rest of the series is a hunt across feudal Japan for pieces that Kagome alone can see. She keeps commuting. School exams, her mother's cooking and a bicycle all make it through the well with her, and the series gets a lot of comedy out of a girl explaining her absences to a modern teacher.
Her archery is untrained and enormously strong, because she is the reincarnation of the priestess Kikyo, and the story spends years refusing to let that be a simple fact. Rumiko Takahashi wrote her as a normal, blunt, sometimes irritable teenager dropped into a legend, which is exactly why the sit command lands as well as it does.
Spelling KAGOME
KAGOME is six letters and the ending is where guesses fail, because that final E is pronounced and English speakers reach for an A instead. The name comes from a children's game, Kagome Kagome, in which a blindfolded child sits in a circle and guesses who is standing behind them. The game wants the given name, not the surname Higurashi.
