Kakashi Hatake takes Team 7 as his first successful students, having failed every squad handed to him before them, and opens by teaching that the mission matters less than the people sent on it. The mask stays on throughout. Nobody in the series gets a satisfying answer about what is underneath, and an entire filler episode is built out of the cast failing to find out.
The Sharingan in his left eye is not his by birth. It was a gift from a teammate, and it is where the nickname comes from: the eye reads a technique while it is being performed and lets him reproduce it, which over a career adds up to a thousand copied jutsu. It also drains him badly, since he has no Uchiha blood to carry it.
Under the slouch is one of the most damaged people in the cast, and Kishimoto releases that information slowly, in flashbacks placed years apart. His name means scarecrow, 案山子, which suits a man who stands about looking useless while everything happens around him. He finishes near the top of almost every popularity poll the series has ever run.
Spelling KAKASHI
KAKASHI is seven letters and repeats its opening: KA, then KA, then SHI. Three vowels, all of them A or I, and the doubled syllable means a confirmed K on tile one gives you tile three for nothing. It is the ordinary Japanese word for scarecrow. The row wants the given name rather than HATAKE.
