Kazuto Kirigaya was one of a thousand beta testers, so when ten thousand players log into Sword Art Online on launch day and discover the exit menu is gone, he already knows where the good hunting is. He tells one person and runs for the next village. That decision defines him: competent, fast, and unwilling to be responsible for anyone he might lose.
Players who used the beta get called beaters, a slur Kirito adopts on purpose to keep other people out of the blast radius. He plays solo, levels past everyone, and eventually turns up with a unique skill nobody else earned, Dual Blades, which lets him hold a sword in each hand. The game's rules reward obsession and he has plenty.
Reki Kawahara published the story free on his own website from 2002, then in print with Dengeki Bunko from 2009 once a different manuscript won him a prize. A-1 Pictures animated it in 2012, and the show became the reference point for the entire trapped-in-a-game boom that followed it.
Spelling KIRITO
KIRITO is six letters and it is a handle rather than a name, which is why it decodes. Take KIRIgaya, his family name, and the TO that ends his given name Kazuto, and push them together. Two I's, at positions two and four, with an O closing it. No long vowels, no doubled letters, nothing hiding in the Japanese.
