Kuwabara starts as the rival delinquent, the boy who challenges Yusuke Urameshi to a fight every week and loses every week, and he is still doing it after his rival comes back from the dead. What he turns out to have is sensitivity. His awareness of spirit energy is sharper than anyone else's in the group, which lets him detect what is coming long before the specialists do.
He learns to compress that energy into a blade, the spirit sword, which he can extend, split and shape once he stops thinking of it as a weapon he was handed. He also keeps a code that the series never mocks: he does not hit women, he does not abandon a friend, and he says both out loud in situations where saying so is dangerous.
Yoshihiro Togashi gives him the worst odds on purpose. In tournaments he is regularly the weakest fighter on the mat, and his matches are built around whether stubbornness can substitute for power. Often it cannot. He gets up anyway, which is the argument the character exists to make.
Spelling KUWABARA
The game wants the family name, KUWABARA, rather than Kazuma. Eight letters and three A's, sitting in positions four, six and eight, so the tail alternates. Watch the opening: KUWA is three kana, ku-wa, and dropping the W to guess KUABARA is the common error. The same word doubled, kuwabara kuwabara, is an old Japanese charm muttered to keep lightning away.
