Kyon narrates the entire series in a tone of exhausted commentary. He is an ordinary second-year who gave up on believing in anything unusual sometime in middle school, and he sits in front of Haruhi Suzumiya, which is the mistake that costs him the next several years. Answering one of her questions politely gets him drafted into the club permanently.
He is the only member who has to be told what everyone else already knows: the quiet girl reading in the corner is an alien interface, the shy upperclassman is from the future, the smiling transfer student can move buildings. All three of them explain the situation to him and then leave him to manage it, because he is the person Haruhi listens to.
The nickname came from a relative and stuck against his wishes, which is roughly how everything happens to him. His running argument with the story is that he did not ask for any of this, delivered while doing the work anyway, and the light novels turn that into one of the most imitated narrative voices of the decade.
Spelling KYON
KYON is four letters and, unusually, an answer with only one vowel in it. The Y is doing consonant work here rather than vowel work, the way it does in Kyoto, so the word is a single beat: kyon. Since his real name is never given in the books, the nickname is all there is, which makes this the rare row with no family name to rule out.
