Mikuru Asahina is a third-year who was walking down a corridor when Haruhi decided the club needed someone cute, and was dragged in by the wrist before she could finish a sentence. She spends most of her screen time being put into costumes she did not agree to, apologising, and pouring tea for people who outrank her by nothing except confidence.

She is also an agent from the future, sent back to observe Haruhi, and the least effective one on the team. Most of what she knows is classified from her own mouth, so her explanations stop mid-word. Kyon gets used to the phrase that means she cannot say. When the story allows her to act, she does it precisely and then goes back to the tea.

The tension between those two versions is the character. Tanigawa writes her as the club's soft target and then reminds you, at intervals, that she volunteered for a mission in a century she has never lived in and cannot go home from whenever she likes.

Spelling MIKURU

MIKURU is six letters, three of them vowels, and it ends on the same U it carries in the middle. The R is a true R here rather than the L that English ears sometimes reach for. Her given name is written in hiragana in the original, and it is what the game wants; Asahina, the family name, is a letter longer and a different row.
