Makoto Kino transfers into Usagi's school with a reputation that got there first: too tall, too strong, expelled from somewhere for fighting. Most of it is wrong. She is a girl who lost her parents in a plane crash, lives alone in a flat, cooks properly for one, and would very much like some friends, which is the first thing Usagi offers her.
As Sailor Jupiter she throws lightning and hits harder than the rest of the team put together, and she is the one who steps in front when a fight goes badly. Takeuchi builds her out of a contradiction that was unusual for early nineties girls' comics. The physically strongest character is also the most domestic, and neither half is a joke at the other's expense.
The crush is a running gag with a sad root. Makoto compares nearly every boy she meets to a senior who once turned her down, and the show plays it lightly while making clear she is a teenager who has been alone in that flat since her parents died. She feeds people constantly. It is most of her vocabulary.
Spelling MAKOTO
MAKOTO is the given name, and the surname Kino stays off the board. Six letters, two O's in the fourth and sixth slots, and a word that exists on its own: makoto means sincerity or truth, and it works as a name for boys and girls alike. Nothing doubles and no vowel here runs long.
