Mayuri Shiina says tutturu when she arrives, which means nothing at all and is the first thing anybody remembers about her. She has been Okabe's friend since childhood, works shifts at a maid cafe, sews cosplay costumes with real skill, and describes herself as the lab's hostage, a title she invented and thoroughly enjoys.
She is not clever about the time travel and never pretends to be. What she has instead is a fixed position. She is the one who notices that Okabe has been awake for two days, and the one who tells him she will find him again in whatever the current version of the world turns out to be. In a plot about rewriting history, that is a load-bearing job.
Steins;Gate uses her carefully. For the first half she is the comedy and the domestic warmth, the person who brings the food and mispronounces the equipment. Then the story turns, and every gentle thing established about her becomes the weight that makes the second half hurt. It is one of the cleanest setups in the medium.
Spelling MAYURI
MAYURI is six letters and the game wants the given name rather than SHIINA, which carries a doubled I of its own. Three vowels alternating with three consonants, ma-yu-ri, and the Y here is a consonant rather than the vowel English often makes of it. Watch the tail: RI, not RY or REE, with no long vowel to drop.
