Meryl Stryfe works for the Bernardelli Insurance Society, which has a strong professional interest in a man carrying a sixty billion double dollar bounty and a habit of being nearby when property stops existing. Her job is to follow him and keep the claims down. She is short, sharp, permanently exasperated, and carries several dozen derringers under her cape.
Her partner Milly Thompson is enormous, cheerful, and armed with a stun gun the size of a fence post, and the two of them spend the early episodes refusing to believe that the idiot they have found is the outlaw the whole planet fears. Meryl is the reader's seat in the story. She starts out certain Vash is a fraud and slowly works out something worse.
Trigun uses her to keep the comedy grounded. The desert planet runs on scarcity, salvage and insurance claims, and Meryl is the only person on screen who thinks about the bill. Yasuhiro Nightow started the manga in 1995, Madhouse animated it in 1998, and Studio Orange's 2023 remake changed her job to reporting and kept the temper intact.
Spelling MERYL
MERYL is five letters and the Y is the entire trap. Spoken aloud it could be Merle, Merrill or Meryl, and the tiles want the version with a Y in the fourth slot, spelled the way Meryl Streep spells it. Japanese メリル, meriru, hides the choice completely. One E, one Y, nothing doubled: MERYL.
