Nicholas D. Wolfwood turns up in a black suit with a cigarette, a friendly manner and a cross wrapped in bandages strapped to his back. The cross is called the Punisher. It opens into a machine gun, a rocket launcher and a pair of handguns, and he uses all of it, which is the first sign that his rules and Vash's are not the same rules.
He runs an orphanage. Most of what he does, the killing included, he does to keep those children fed and out of trouble, and he made his peace with that arithmetic long ago. Travelling with a man who refuses to kill anybody forces him to defend the peace out loud, over and over, and Trigun hands him the better argument more often than you might expect.
That tension is the heart of the series. Wolfwood is warm, funny and practical, and the story keeps asking whether being practical is a virtue or a slow surrender. Yasuhiro Nightow drew him with a chain-smoker's slouch and a preacher's patter, and readers who came for the gunfights tend to stay for him. Madhouse animated the 1998 series and Studio Orange remade it in 2023.
Spelling WOLFWOOD
WOLFWOOD is eight letters and a compound: WOLF plus WOOD, two W's and three O's. Say it as two words and it types itself. The Japanese ウルフウッド keeps both halves, so for once nothing is lost on the way into English. The only wobble is the middle, where the F and the second W sit against each other with no vowel between them.
