Mitsuha Miyamizu is a high schooler in Itomori, a small lakeside town in the mountains where everybody knows her family runs the shrine and everybody watched her dance at the festival in full costume. Her father left the household for local politics, her grandmother teaches her braiding and ritual, and she is quietly furious about all of it.
Then she starts waking up as somebody else. A few days a week she is a boy in Tokyo, badly, and he is her, worse, and neither of them believes it until the notes start piling up. Makoto Shinkai plays the first act as comedy: the wrong body, the wrong voice, the school friends noticing that Mitsuha has been strange lately.
What she does with Tokyo is enjoy it. Cafes, trains, tall buildings, all of it treated with the specific greed of somebody who has read about a place for years. Shinkai's backgrounds do most of that work. Your Name opened in Japan in August 2016 and finished as the highest-grossing Japanese film released to that point.
Spelling MITSUHA
MITSUHA is seven letters covering three Japanese beats, mi-tsu-ha, and TSU is a single kana that eats three of them. The name is written 三葉, three leaves, and her younger sister is Yotsuha, four leaves, which is the kind of family joke that makes a spelling stick. The H near the end is a full beat, not a breath.
