Taki Tachibana lives in Tokyo, goes to school, works evening shifts at an Italian restaurant, and fills a sketchbook with cityscapes nobody has asked to see. The swapping starts without warning and without explanation, and he handles it by leaving notes on Mitsuha's phone and picking fights with people who have been rude to her.
The film gets a lot of comedy out of him being a disaster inside her life. He sits wrong, speaks wrong, and builds her a reputation among her classmates that she has to live with afterwards. He also, without noticing, fixes a few things she could not. The second half turns all of that around and asks what he will do about a town he has only ever visited in his sleep.
Shinkai wrote and directed Your Name at CoMix Wave Films, with Radwimps writing the score and the songs, which carry the montage sequences almost single-handed. Taki's sketchbook becomes the way he searches, since he can draw a place from memory and has no name to type into a search box.
Spelling TAKI
TAKI is four letters and two beats, ta-ki, with nothing hidden in it. The kanji is 瀧, an older form of the character for waterfall, which is a pointed name in a film this preoccupied with water. The thing to avoid is doubling: no TAKKI, no TAAKI. Short answers punish careless vowels harder than long ones do.
