Roy Mustang is the Flame Alchemist, and his method is chemistry rather than fire magic. The gloves are woven from an ignition cloth that sparks when he snaps, and the array stitched on the back lets him thin or concentrate the oxygen in a chosen patch of air before lighting it. Rain makes him useless, which the series enjoys pointing out at length.
He is also a career officer with a plan: reach the top of the military and force his country to look at what it did in Ishval, where he burned people under orders and has not stopped counting them since. The ambition is real and the guilt is real, and Fullmetal Alchemist refuses to let either one cancel the other out.
His team follow him personally rather than institutionally, Riza Hawkeye above all, and that loyalty drives most of the story's back half. Mustang is smug in public and considerably worse in private. Toru Ohkawa voices him in Brotherhood and Travis Willingham in the English dub, both leaning on the smugness before anything else.
Spelling MUSTANG
MUSTANG is the family name and seven letters, which is what the tiles want rather than Roy. It is the ordinary English word for a wild horse, so nothing here is Japanese. Guesses slip at the ending, which is ANG and not ANGE or ANGUE. One U, one A, no doubled letters, and an ST cluster in the middle to anchor the row.
