Nanachi lives alone in a hollowed-out nest on the fourth layer of the Abyss, covered in pale fur, with long ears and a habit of ending sentences on a noise no translator has fully solved. Riko and Reg arrive by accident, half dead. Nanachi already knows more about the Abyss and its curse than anyone the pair have met, having survived what that curse does at close range.
The knowledge came from being a human child taken into somebody's experiment. The Abyss punishes ascent, and the punishment worsens the deeper you have already been. Akihito Tsukushi draws the results with a level of anatomical detail the soft art style does not prepare a reader for, and Nanachi's history is where the series drops any pretence of being an adventure for children.
In practice Nanachi is the party medic, the poison expert and the only competent adult present, delivered in a small furry package that has sold merchandise by the pallet. Tsukushi began the manga online in 2012, and Kinema Citrus animated it in 2017 with a score by Kevin Penkin that does a lot of the emotional lifting.
Spelling NANACHI
NANACHI is seven letters and repeats its opening syllable: na, na, chi. That doubling is most of the word, so one confirmed N usually hands you two tiles. The CH is a single Japanese sound, which means no T sneaks in ahead of it. No long vowels, no surname, and nothing else in the row to argue with.
