Riko grew up in Orth, a town built around the rim of the Abyss, in an orphanage that trains children to dig relics out of the upper layers. Her mother was a famous diver who went down and did not come back. A message surfaces saying she is waiting at the bottom, and Riko, who has neither the strength nor the experience for that trip, packs a bag and goes.
The Abyss punishes the return, not the descent. Climbing back up brings nausea, then bleeding, then effects considerably worse, and the deeper you have been the heavier the bill. That single rule turns every step downward into a decision nobody can reverse, and it is what separates Made in Abyss from every other adventure story with a map in the front.
Riko herself is an odd mixture: cheerful, reckless, encyclopaedic about relics and hopeless at most other things. She takes injuries that would end a gentler story and keeps walking. Tsukushi uses her enthusiasm as a lure, so a reader follows her down for the same reasons she does and ends up somewhere much darker than expected.
Spelling RIKO
RIKO is four letters, which leaves nowhere to hide. The R is the one to watch, since Japanese has a single sound where English hears both R and L, and a different translator could plausibly have delivered LIKO. The -ko ending is the common suffix on Japanese girls' names, written with the character for child. No long vowels.
