Neji belongs to the Hyuga branch family, which exists to protect the main house. The mark on his forehead is a seal the main house can trigger at will, and he has worn it since he was four. He is also the best fighter his generation of the clan produced, better than the heiress he is required to defend, and he knows it.
The Byakugan gives him a field of vision covering almost everything around him simultaneously, with one small blind spot behind the neck. His clan's gentle fist closes chakra points with precise strikes, and his Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms shuts sixty-four of them in a few seconds. He also spins, throwing chakra outward in a sphere that deflects anything incoming.
Through most of Part I his position is that fate decides everything and effort changes nothing, which is convenient for somebody who cannot remove the seal himself. Naruto beating him is the point of the Chunin Exams. What Neji does with the loss afterwards is more interesting than the fight, and he turns into the steadiest adult in his year.
Spelling NEJI
NEJI is four letters and the J is the whole story. It is rare enough on this board that one J effectively finishes the row, since very little else fits around it. The word ネジ means screw in ordinary Japanese. Two beats, ne-ji, with the E sounded the way it is in HOKAGE, and no family name required.
