Rukia Kuchiki arrives in Karakura Town on a routine assignment, gets badly hurt, and makes an illegal decision: she offers a human boy a fraction of her power so he can fight in her place. Ichigo takes all of it. Stripped of her abilities and stuck in the living world, she enrols in his school, moves into his closet, and starts teaching him a job she can no longer do herself.
The Soul Society sends people to collect her, and giving power to a human turns out to carry a death sentence. That arrest, and the execution date that follows it, is the engine of Bleach's best-loved arc. Her adoptive brother Byakuya signs off on it. Her childhood friend Renji comes to take her back. Neither of them asks what she wants.
Her blade, Sode no Shirayuki, is described in the series as the most beautiful ice-type zanpakuto, and it fights by freezing rather than cutting. Away from all that she draws explanatory diagrams with rabbits in them. The drawings are genuinely dreadful, everyone says so, and she will hit you for mentioning it.
Spelling RUKIA
RUKIA is five letters with three vowels, which makes it an efficient guess even when you are wrong. The Japanese is ルキア, and the first kana is the R that English localisation sometimes turns into L in other names. Here the R survives, so do not reach for LUKIA. The vowel run at the end, I then A, is the part people reverse when typing it from memory.
