Sagiri holds a rank in the Yamada Asaemon line, a house of executioners and sword testers, and she is one of very few women ever to carry the name. Her assignment is Gabimaru: escort him to the island, watch him retrieve the elixir, and take his head if he fails or turns. She swings first in chapter one and the blade stops.
What follows is less about swordsmanship than about what she has been told her skill is for. She cuts precisely rather than hard, which makes her lethal against anything with anatomy, and she spends the series arguing with herself over whether precision counts as virtue when the job is killing. Gabimaru, who has no such doubts, is a poor person to work it out next to and the obvious one.
The family is real. Generations of Yamada Asaemon served the Tokugawa shogunate as official sword testers, trying new blades on the bodies of the executed, and the name carried enough weight that people used it as a nickname for the job itself.
Spelling SAGIRI
The tiles want SAGIRI, the given name, and leave the inherited title Yamada Asaemon alone. Six letters, alternating consonant and vowel the whole way, sa-gi-ri, with a hard G as in give and only one of them. Nothing is lost between the kana and the alphabet here. The real risk is not the spelling but the instinct to type a family name, which in this case is three words long.
