The introduction is the trick. Everything the series has taught you about how difficult the golden transformation is, and how much a fight against a galactic emperor costs, gets overturned by a teenager nobody has met. He then waits politely for Goku to arrive, delivers a warning about a heart virus and two androids appearing in three years, and refuses to explain himself further.
He is from a future where those androids won. His mother built the time machine, his father died before he was born, and the timeline he comes from is a ruin he is trying to spare this one. The reveal that his parents are Bulma and Vegeta reframes both of them, and the version of him growing up in the present as a small boy running around with Goten is the same person under very different conditions.
Dragon Ball Super brought the future version back in 2017 for a second arc, older and wearing the same coat. The family naming rule survives him intact: his mother is named after gym shorts and his sister is named Bra, so a boy called Trunks is exactly what the Briefs would produce.
Spelling TRUNKS
TRUNKS is six letters with a single vowel, which makes it awkward to reach by guessing vowels first. It is an English word borrowed whole, so nothing was trimmed on the way in, and the final S is part of the name rather than a plural. The consonant run at the end, N, K and S together, is the giveaway once one of them lands.
