Whis carries a staff, speaks like a butler, and is stronger than the destroyer he serves. Angels in Dragon Ball are attached to gods of destruction as teachers, minders and pilots, and Whis has been training Beerus for a very long time with the patience of someone who knows his charge will nap through most of the lesson. He can rewind time by three minutes, which he uses exactly as sparingly as a writer would want.
He also has the appetite that drives half the plot of Battle of Gods. Earth food is new to him, he is delighted by it, and he keeps the planet in one piece partly for culinary reasons. Later he takes Goku and Vegeta on as students on Beerus's world, where the training is mostly about wasting less energy, a lesson neither of them enjoys.
The angel names come from drinks. Whis is whisky, his sister Vados is Calvados, their colleague Beerus and his brother Champa fill in beer and champagne. Their father, the Grand Priest, sits at the top of the hierarchy and answers to the king of everything.
Spelling WHIS
WHIS is four letters and the H is an English addition. ウイス is Uisu, which has no H sound anywhere in it, and the spelling only makes sense once you know the intended pun is whisky. Short rows are hard to attack, so use the W: very few answers in the set open with one, and placing it usually narrows the field fast.
